Overview
Dental implants have transformed modern restorative care, yet peri-implantitis remains one of the most challenging and increasingly encountered complications facing clinicians today.
Synopsis and Learning outcomes
This presentation provides a structured clinical overview of peri-implantitis, exploring the biological basis of disease, evidence-based diagnostic criteria, and management strategies available.
Through a series of illustrative cases, attendees will gain practical insights into clinical decision-making, from early detection through to surgical intervention and supportive peri-implant care. The session is designed to equip clinicians with the knowledge and confidence to better recognise, triage, and manage affected patients within their own practice.
- Describe the aetiology and pathogenesis of peri-implantitis, distinguishing it from peri-implant mucositis.
- Apply contemporary diagnostic criteria to accurately identify and stage peri-implantitis.
- Outline the range of non-surgical and surgical management options for peri-implantitis, understanding the indications, limitations, and evidence base for each approach.
- Communicate effectively with patients and colleagues regarding peri-implantitis diagnosis, prognosis, treatment planning, and the importance of long-term maintenance.
- Deliver structured supportive peri-implant care, including recall intervals, professional debridement considerations, and monitoring protocols that enable early detection and timely referral.
