Lecture Synopsis:

Minimal Intervention Dentistry: An Update on Caries Management - Professor Hien Ngo

Dental caries represents a significant public health challenge, impacting individual well-being and resulting in financial burdens, pain, functional impairment, and diminished quality of life. The Minimal Intervention(MI) dentistry approach is a patient centred caries management philosophy, bolstered by pivotal policy statements from the FDI in 2002, 2012, and 2013. This presentation will explore the clinical applications ofMI in caries management, emphasizing patient-centered and non-surgical techniques alongside minimally invasive options that prioritize the preservation of tooth structure and vitality. Key discussion points willinclude assessing patient risk factors, formulating tailored management strategies, addressing caries and hypersensitivity, and effectively utilizing preventive products. Attendees will also learn about innovative in-office and at-home care methods. Participants can look forward to gaining valuable insights into new dental materials that will enhance their capacity to deliver effective, predictable care to their patients.

Learning outcomes:

  • Clinical management of caries
  • Effective home care regimes
  • Fluoride modes of operation
  • Toxic effects of Fluoride

Whitening 101 - Jasmine Bell

This presentation aims to provide dental professionals with a comprehensive, clinically-focused review of contemporary teeth whitening. It will bridge regulatory frameworks, underlying chemistry, risk management, and case selection to support safe, ethical, and effective whitening delivery in practice. A curated series of clinical photographs will illustrate treatment protocols, outcomes, and potential complications.

From OHT to Health System Funding - Behind the Scenes of How Our Health System is Funded - Tim Budden

The presentation will cover broadly how our health system functions and is funded and then cover some dental specific funding issues. The aim is to give attendees a high-level understanding of our health system and how dental fits in which may help to understand some of the challenges we face in advocating for better dental funding.

Demystifying the relationship between kidney disease and periodontitis - Dr Isaac He

A summary of the thesis I submitted for my DClinDent which focuses on the evidence on the association between chronic kidney disease and periodontitis followed by a clinical study focusing on Periodontitis in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with kidney disease in South Australia.

The Neuro-Affirming Way: How to support your Neurodivergent patients to feel safe and heard The GoldStandard to empower Autism, PDA and ADHD in clinical practice - Mark Le Messurier

This presentation moves away from the traditional deficit-focused medical model (a "fix it" approach) to a strengths-based model that validates neurodivergent identities. In the hour we have together, I’ll set the scene by outlining the rise in neuro-affirming attitudes and approaches sweeping across the community, the workforce and in schools. This will add context to why a neuro-affirming framework is critical within clinical practice. You will learn how to shift from "treating symptoms" to fostering an environment where Autistic, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) patients feel inherently valued, safe and understood.

Learning objectives:

  • Being able to discern between the medical and Neuro-Affirming models: Participants will learn to shift from a deficit-focused "fix it" approach to a strengths-based model that validates neurodivergent identities.
  • Practical strategies: Ideas to identify and ease sensory triggers in clinical spaces - such as lighting, noise, and seating - to reduce patient anxiety.
  • Empowering the PDA Profile: Attendees will learn to use a communication style that focuses on sharing observations, thoughts, and experiences, rather than giving direct instructions or placing too many demands on patients.
  • Understand and adopt various communication styles: Participants will learn to honour all forms of communication, including non-verbal cues, visual aids, and written options, rather than mandating neurotypical norms like eye contact.
  • Encourage self-advocacy: The session will offer tools to enable patients to recognize their own needs, to set their own goals with you, and feel safe saying "no" during clinical interactions.
  • The gold- standard: We move beyond basic awareness to implementing a strengths-based approach.
  • By the end of this session, each attendee will have a roadmap to transform their practice into a space that not only empowers neurodivergence, but reflects what’s happening in the broader community.
